Yukki feels lonely and uncertain, struggling with an anxiety disorder caused by the divorce of his parents, which was deeply traumatizing. The Gasai couple abused and neglected their daughter, Yuno, making her twisted enough to kill. Reisuke, the Fifth, was born with a limited range of emotion, appearing unfeeling as a small child. His grief over lack of attention from his parents and exposure to a corrupt cult shaped him into a distant person. Similarly, Tsubaki, the Sixth, might have been a happy and confident girl if not for the deaths of her parents and the rape she suffered at the hands of cult members.
The sevenths, Marco and Ai, were molded by violence and tragedy in the survival game, where a teenage rapist victimized Ai, causing Marco to reactively slaughter him. Minene, the Ninth, experienced starving and danger in the Middle East, showing how environment intensifies trauma. Similarly, the Gasai couple, Ushio and Saika, were mentally unstable and dependent, neglecting their adoptive parents duties and abusing Yuno, even locking her up at times. Other couples, like Kurusu, Marco, and Ai, were not perfect, showing that even small faults can escalate into problems.
Yuno and Yukki demonstrate a different, yet equally toxic relationship. Each Diary has written or recorded entries with a defined scope, offering advantages and limitations depending on the personality, occupation, hobbies, and general outlook of its user. Some Diaries also have secondary abilities, like the Twelfth, who can hypnotize people, or the Eighth, who can grant Apprentice Diaries to others.
A Diary Holder is the person who owns a Future Diary, with initially twelve candidates, though the video game expands this to Thirteen with the 13th Diary Holder. New Diary Holders can be created by making Apprentice Diaries or using the Eighth’s Blog Diary. Interestingly, a single person is not always the holder; for example, the Seventh candidate consisted of two complementary individuals sharing Future Diaries. In Future Diaries, the safety of a Diary Holder is crucial because each diary is inextricably linked to the user’s existence. If the diary is destroyed, the Holder’s body immediately collapses into a singularity and fades from existence. Similarly, if the holder is killed, the diary loses its powers, lasting just long enough to present the Dead End before reverting to an ordinary object, making it essential to protect the diary at all costs.

- The Indiscriminate Diary, also called 無差別日記 or Musabetsu Nikki, is used by the series protagonist Yukiteru Amano, known as the First. This diary is a cellphone with the ability to read the details of his surroundings, whether present or future, making it very useful in many scenarios. While it cannot tell him about himself, it warns of potential attacks and provides predictions based on Yukiteru’s perception of truth, preventing him from being misled by deceit. The diary also reflects his personality as a reclusive bystander, highlighting his cautious nature.
- The Yukiteru Diary, also called 雪輝日記 or Yukiteru Nikki, belongs to the Second and focuses on the series deuteragonist Yuno Gasai. This diary is a cellphone containing entries detailing Yukiteru’s actions at ten-minute intervals. Although it is one of the weaker Future Diaries in terms of scope, it forms a fearsome combination with the Indiscriminate Diary. Through this diary, Yuno can predict what happens to Yukiteru, while Yukiteru can predict everything else, showing the reflects of obsessive love that Yuno holds for Yukiteru.
- The Murder Diary, also called 殺人日記 or Satsujin Nikki, is the diary used by the Third, Takao Hiyama. This cellphone identifies people he wishes to kill and tells him where they are at any given time, though it cannot predict what his victims will do to defend themselves. The diary reflects his nature as a psychotic serial killer and even makes the user invulnerable to bullets and bombs, a feature shown when the owner confronted the user of the Escape Diary.
- The Criminal Investigation Diary, also called 捜査日記 or Sōsa Nikki, is the diary of the Fourth participant, Keigo Kurusu. It is highly useful for tracking other Survival Game candidates, but it requires him to dedicate time and resources to maximize the benefits of his diary’s predictions.
- The Hyper Vision Diary, also known as はいぱーびじょんだいありー or Haipā Bijon Daiarī, is used by the Fifth participant, Reisuke Houjou. This diary is a coloring book that predicts three entries per day—in the morning, noon, and night. While it may seem weak, it allows Reisuke to plan his entire day at once and provides simple pictures to clarify each prediction. This diary may reflect his impatient and childish behavior, showing a more personal side of Reisuke while he uses it to manage daily events efficiently.
- The Clairvoyance Diary, also called 千里眼日記 or Senrigan Nikki, is used by the Sixth participant, Tsubaki Kasugano. Its reliance on followers leaves her open to sabotage and misdirection, and its fragile nature makes it extremely vulnerable to use. The diary reflects her position as figurehead of the Omekata religion, her poor eyesight, and her supposed clairvoyant powers.
- The Exchange Diaries, also known as 交換日記 or Kōkan Nikki, are the unique diary of the joint Sevenths, Marco Ikusaba and Ai Mikami. This diary comes as a pair of cellphones that describe each other holder’s future and allow them to coordinate their efforts and track one another even when apart. They can switch phones to read their own futures, making it a dual Future Diary. While it is at its weakest when the users are separated, losing one device does not disable or kill the other, and it reflects the deep bond of love between Marco and Ai.
- The Blog Diary, also called 増殖日記, Zōshoku Nikki, or Propagation Diary, and sometimes referred to as the Server Diary, is a laptop computer used by the Eighth, Kamado Ueshita. Unlike many other Future Diaries, it does not predict the future directly, but it enables Kamado to transform people who link to the Blog Diary into Apprentice Diary Users, effectively giving her a potential army to fight on her behalf. This diary also reflects her loving nature, her job as director of Mother’s Village, and her care for the orphanage, making it unique among the other Future Diaries.
- The Escape Diary (逃亡日記, Tōbō Nikki) is used by the Ninth participant, Minene Uryu, and is a cellphone that contains entries designed to inform her how to escape from dangerous situations. - The Breeder Diary, also known as 飼育日記 or Shiiku Nikki, is a unique cellphone diary used by the Tenth, Karyuudo Tsukishima, and sometimes loaned to his daughter, Hinata Hino. This diary enables its user to control Karyuudo’s dogs and see their futures, allowing them to efficiently track enemies and attack from multiple angles at once. It requires greater levels of concentration when more dogs are involved, but this weakness can be circumvented by commanding groups or using a computer to manage their locations. Overall, it reflects Karyuudo’s great love for dogs.
- The Watcher (ザウォッチャ, Za Uotcha) is the diary of the Eleventh John Bacchus, a tablet that can read the entries of every other diary including Apprentice Diaries, allowing him to reveal the Holders’ locations. This enables John to know what his enemies will do, helping him to defend, catch, and take them off-guard, making it one of the strongest Future Diaries. While it reads other entries without confirming validity and is vulnerable to misinformation, it lacks the ability to predict the future or display a Dead End flag. The diary also reflects John’s megalomania, his dream to evolve humanity, his job as mayor of Sakurami City, and his role as co-creator of the Future Diaries.
- The Justice Diary, also called 正義日記 or Seigi Nikki, is used by the Twelfth holder, Yomotsu Hirasaka, and works like an audio recorder that predicts and alerts him to acts of injustice around him. While it cannot discriminate between great acts and simple acts like littering, it gives him the ability to hypnotize people and maintain complete control. This diary reflects his role as a heroic vigilante, the claims he makes, and his desire to spread justice across the world, making it one of the most unique Future Diaries in the series.
The Video Diary, also called ビデオ日記 or Bideo Nikki, is used by the Thirteenth owner, Azami Kirisaki, and is a digital video camera that allows her to visually record the future, shows exactly what she will record in her diary, making it a unique way to track events and understand potential outcomes firsthand.
